Mapy slouží člověku k orientaci v prostoru už od vzniku starověkých civilizací. Za tu dobu se staly velmi používaným informačním nástrojem, o jehož důležitosti není pochyb. Pro dnešního člověka se stala dochovaná kartografická díla také nástrojem poznání hospodářského, mocenského a vojenského vývoje minulosti. Na základě prostorových vazeb znázorněných na starých mapách můžeme analyzovat a odvozovat vztahy mezi jednotlivými jevy v minulosti a tyto zkušenosti přenášet do dnešního rychle se vyvíjecího světa. Právě tato skutečnost je jedním z důvodu řešení projektu, jehož cílem je vytvoření webového archivu mapových děl zobrazujících území města Ústí nad Labem. Cílem není jen sesbírat kartografická díla, ale také je opatřit dalšími bližšími informacemi (metadaty) konkretizujícími dobu vzniku mapy, informacemi o měřítku, autorovi, vydavateli apod. Všechna tato data jsou přístupná veřejnosti přes internet na webovém serveru http://mapserver.fzp.ujep.cz/

Since the times of the Ancient civilisation, maps have been used by people for their orientation. There is no doubt that the maps have since these times become a widely spread informational instrument. In addition, the works of cartography provide our modern historiography with very important information about economical, political and military development of the historical society. We can use the information in the old maps to analyze the spatial relationships between individual historical phenomena and transfer this experience into our very quickly developing world. These above-mentioned facts are the reasons for creating the digital registry of the old maps and regional cadastral plans within the Archives of Ústí nad Labem. The aim is not only to collect all possible cartography documents, but also to affix them with more information, e.g. precise date of origin, scale, the name of the author, publisher etc. All this data will be accessible at web server, which will make them available to everyone interested.
